In Gary’s words…..

Maynard was my first IRWS so I had nothing to compare him to but he was different from day one. A very active dog; probably an Alpha dog, he was strong headed with a high tolerance to pain. Everything was always on his terms. When you wanted to pet him, he wasn't interested but sit down to read a book or get on the computer and he was in your lap. He was a pain at times but that was part of his charm. In 13 hunting seasons we shot 1500 + birds over Maynard. On only 2 occasions did he not find and retrieve a bird that we hit. He was all business in the field and this boy could hunt dead and track. Maynard could also hunt all day and he didn't get any relief until Roman came on the scene when he was 11. Even at 13 years of age he still had to be the first dog on the ground to hunt in the morning and while other dogs walk down a two track with you when you are heading back to the truck Maynard would still jump back into the thicket always looking for one more grouse. If I had to describe him in one word it would be “workhorse”. Going on 14 years of age he has become the sweet, wise and worldly old man of our house who greatly deserves our attention and respect.
