The Guardians |
|
Sheep are pretty helpless in the face of danger. Their only natural defense is to run faster than a predator. For many years, shepherds have partnered with specially bred guardian dogs, with donkeys, or with llamas. These animals are all very anti-predator. The big dogs challenge wolves, coyotes, or stray dogs with a resounding bark, and place themselves between their flock and the invaders, tail raised to indicate it is not wise for them to come closer.
Newhope’s first guardian was Roy, a purebred Great Pyrenees, followed by Indy, and recently a new Great Pyrenees puppy, Chienne. |
